A Validation Study of the School Refusal Assessment Scale for Korean adolescents
Kim Keum-Woon

Abstract
The present study tested validity and reliability of the SRAS developed by Kearney & Siverman (1933) using Korean adolescents as the subjects. The 395 middle school students and 432 highschool students in Gwang-ju, Chon-Nam areas participated in the study. Factor analyses revealed that the lower level of SRAS consisted of three components such as ¡°avoidance of negative affectivity-provoking situation¡±, ¡°positive tangible reinforcement¡± and ¡°attention-getting behavior¡±. Correlations among the SRAS factors and between the total score and each factor indicated that are statistically significant. They also showed significant correlations with anxiety and depression supported for the converging validity. Both indicidual and total component scores in the school refusal group were generally higher than the non-refusal group. In addition, the potential school refusal group who only had an idea of it scored higher in all components and the total score, compared to those who never had the idea. Finally reliability of the SRAS appeared to be moderate with the Cronbach alpha coefficient 0.50-0.87 and the coefficient for split-half reliability was 0.82.
